Resources for 2025 Fires

UPDATE: 1/15/25

For schools that have been reopened, if conditions remain the same or improve, the District will resume additional activities:

  • Outdoor activity, including PE, athletics, recess, nutrition, and lunch, will resume. Principals can still implement modified schedules based on local conditions and needs.

  • Third-party activity on campuses will resume. Specific impacted schools may delay this resumption based on local conditions, needs, and capacity.

  • Anticipating field trips to resume by Thursday. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

There remain 7 schools that reside in evacuation zones, and they have been temporarily relocated to alternate sites for the rest of this week:

  • Topanga Elementary to Woodland Hills Academy

  • Canyon Charter Elementary to Brockton Elementary School

  • Kenter Canyon Elementary to Emerson Middle School

  • Lanai Road Elementary to Portola Middle School

  • Roscomare Road Elementary to Warner Elementary School

  • Community Charter Magnet to Westwood Elementary School

  • Paul Revere Middle to University High School Charter

A meal distribution site continues to be available for these communities at Webster Middle School from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m

We are continuing our return to normalcy and will welcome students, families, and employees from Palisades Charter Elementary and Marquez Charter Elementary, who have been displaced by the devastating Palisades Fire, to their relocated schools – Brentwood Science Magnet Elementary and Nora Sterry Elementary, respectively – on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Schools will have a regular day, as teachers have worked around the clock to prepare classrooms.

For schools that were previously reopened, if conditions remain the same or improve, the District will resume additional activities:

  • Outdoor activity, including PE, athletics, recess, nutrition, and lunch. However, principals can still implement modified schedules based on local conditions and needs.
  • Third-party activity on campuses. Specific impacted schools may delay this resumption based on local conditions, needs, and capacity.

We anticipate that field trips can resume by Thursday.

We understand that the ongoing fires and wind still impact students, families, and employees and may not be able to attend school or work. However, the District is providing sites, alternatives, and support for families and employees.

Thanks to the tireless work of District employees who continue to support schools and campuses, teachers who have returned to classrooms, classified and certificated substitutes who have helped provide coverage for displaced employees, the countless individuals who have worked around the clock, school police and first responders and local authorities to ensure the safety and readiness of our school communities.

The National Weather Service’s High Wind warning has been reduced to a wind advisory for Wednesday, Jan. 14; however, Red Flag warnings remain in effect. We will continue to monitor conditions near current fire zones. Should conditions change, we will begin notifying families and employees by 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

About Masks:

• When air is unhealthy, the best option is to reduce physical activity and stay indoors with windows/doors closed. If indoor temperature is high, get to a location with clean filtered air such as a public library, shopping mall or other building with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system filtration.

• Masks have limitations. Surgical gauze masks provide no protection from smoke. N95 respirator masks are designed for professional use by trained adults and are not intended for children.

• N95 masks require a perfect seal to be effective. If these masks are not fitted correctly, they will provide little if any protection.

• Masks can exacerbate breathing difficulty for sensitive breathers or potentially cause deeper breathing, which draws particulates deeper into the lungs if they are not fitted correctly.

• Masks must be kept clean and replaced frequently to be effective. If a mask is used, please refer to the mask manufacturer’s recommendations on cleaning and replacement intervals.
