Special Education Committee Meeting Update – 9/11/24

The Board’s Special Education Committee met on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 3pm. This was our first meeting of the school year. 

WHAT THE COMMITTEE LEARNED:

  • Division of Special Education Listen and Learn Campaign
  • The Special Education Division will host focus groups to determine its direction, with public input from teachers, parents, students, local agencies, and others.
  • Additionally, a survey will be live next week with a QR code to collect qualitative information regarding special education, and the process will be anonymous. 
  • A future follow-up report will be presented to the Special Education Committee to outline the findings.
  • The timeline is October – early November, and the Special Education Division will budget it.
  • Opening of Schools 2024-2025 School Year
  • Over 6,000,000 service minutes were delivered to students, 734 IEP team meetings were held, and 603 transit service requests were completed. 
  • LAUSD has its call center that supports schools and families, and many of these requests support transportation.
  • APEIS Leadership Academy took place July 29-31, 2024 – all APEIS and regional staff attended and had professional development.
  • General education teachers will receive training designated for special education students and a micro-credential to support students with disabilities.
  • CEEDAR is working with the LAUSD Special Education to support schools in increasing the rate of inclusivity at schools.
