WHAT THE COMMITTEE LEARNED:
- The Office of Government Relations has been monitoring the following issues as they relate to education: social media, technology, gun reform, affordable housing.
- A survey of parents and students was conducted to help the Office of Government Relations prioritize what stakeholders care for the most, such as student mental health, climate justice, funding, and more.
- Sponsored bills by LAUSD have been mandatory kindergarten (SB 767), enrollment-based funding (SB98), ELD Courses for Graduation, reform for the student Narcan Carry Policy, and others.
- The COLA is likely to be reduced from 3% to 1% due to state revenues being lower than expected.
- The state requires a TK 1-10 teacher – student ratio, and fiscal penalties can be applied if the district exceeds the ratio.
- The Metro GoPass program for students will expire in 2024, but the district is working with LA Metro to extend the program permanently.
