Here’s what happened at the 10/17/23 meeting of the LAUSD School Board

At today’s Board Meeting the Board considered several important items.

The Superintendent made these presentations:

Green School Yards (presentation)

  • Green Schools for All Resolution” adopts the standard of 30% green/natural space for all District schools.
  • Priority will be given to school communities most affected by extreme heat & climate change. The following BD3 Schools are included in the Priority List: Canoga Park EL (3.02% green schoolyard), Sylvan Park EL (5.64% green schoolyard), Hart St EL (7.59% green schoolyard), Hazel Tine EL (7.41% green schoolyard)

Electrification (presentation)

  • The presentation represented an update about the District’s work following the directive by the Board Resolution:
    “Transitioning Los Angeles Unified School District to 100% Clean, Renewable Energy Resulting in Healthier Students and More Sustainable, Equitable Communities”

RESOLUTION: Dyslexia Awareness Month – watch Board action on this item here

Full Text Press Release

Approval of this item means that:

  • the Superintendent will utilize resources from the Division of Instruction to conduct community outreach regarding the State’s mandate to screen for reading difficulties including dyslexia; and
  • the Parent Center will dedicate the month of October to educate parents by dispelling the myths of dyslexia and ensuring that students receive the services and support they need to learn to read

Approval of this resolution means that:

  • the Superintendent’s office will explore the possibility of establishing a lesson plan on the history of Historic Filipinotown and important Filipino figures in Los Angeles as well as creating a dual language program in the Filipino language after a viability study has been completed; and
  • the District will work with all LAUSD schools to accurately and positively celebrate Filipino history and heritage.

BM Schmerelson Statement on Item 29: Adoption of the 2024-2025 Health Benefits Agreement between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Health Benefits Committee effective January 1, 2024, through December 31, 2025.


Community schools:  

  • Contract with Unite-LA to engage community partners with the Community Schools Initiative. BD3 schools: Northridge MS, Van Nuys EL

Facilties Contract Actions

    • BD3 services projects: Addams Continuation HS (roofing, $196,310), El Camino Charter HS (turf field replacement, $595K), Basset Street ES (Accessibility project, $277,008)
    • Approve the New Chatsworth Early Education Center Project$5,163,799

 Board District Priority and Region Priority Projects Approval for 7 BDP and RP projects with a budget of $874,289

    • Canoga Park ES (New STEAM Lab. $54,104)
    •  Dearborn Charter Academy (classroom furniture, $32,248) 
    • Limerick ES (exterior lunch tables, $39,695)
    • Northridge Academy (shade structures, $322,108)
    •  Sylvan Park ES (shade structures, $399,979)
