WHAT THE COMMITTEE LEARNED:
- Smarter Balance Assessment 2 (SBA) 2023-2024 Results
- Overall, every student grade level and demographic saw an increase in distance from the standard and has met or exceeded the standard for ELA and Math for the 2023 results.
- On average, LAUSD students are 24 points below the threshold but moving closer to the ELA standard with increases in all grade levels. 6th grade saw the highest growth at 6.41 points.
- Statewide, California students saw a 0.38 increase in students meeting or exceeding ELA standards, and LAUSD saw a 1.89-point increase.
- Grade 8 saw the most significant improvement in math standards, with 8.11 points closer to standard.
- The Local Region Superintendents shared some strategies they emphasize to improve school performance. They are focusing on data, fostering meaningful collaboration, continuing to strengthen school partnerships, and creating joyful environments for students and staff.
- 2024-2025 Budget Priorities Discussion
- Fiscal year 2025 investment highlights include $216m in arts, $80m in Cultural Arts Passport, $899m in after-school programs, and $125m in BSAP funding.
- General unrestricted funds are set at $7.2b for the next year and can be spent for any general education purpose such as BSAP, custodians, SENI, etc.
- Through 2008-2013, staff levels were reduced to match the student population, and levels were raised in fiscal year 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic; meanwhile, student enrollment continues to decline.
- $6 billion of Federal Covid Relief (ESSER) funding has ended and will not be replaced.
- The district is developing new data dashboards and reporting tools.
