WHAT THE COMMITTEE LEARNED:

Strong Relationships Between Families, Students, and Their Schools to Improve Student Success

  • Professional development and summits are available for family and community engagement staff.
  • LAUSD is the first district in the U.S. to offer a Family Engagement Micro-credential Program (started 2023-24).
  • 84.3% of students linked to a parent portal account in SY 23-24
  • In 2024-2025, efforts will focus on outreach to increase participation trends by 10% for webinars and to 75 participants per Region events. 
  • School volunteers have increased by 136% – school nurses can now do TB screenings, and application progress status can now be tracked in real-time.

Support for Students Experiencing Homelessness and in Foster Care

  • Student housing questionnaire needs to meet the limits of McKinney-Vento Act – either a fixed, regular, adequate nighttime residence. 
  • Mobile Laundry Truck has served over 350 families (700 children) at Taft High School and 240 families (500 children served) at 9th St. Elementary School.
  • LAUSD Clothing Boutiques will launch to provide essential needs, such as clothes and shoes, for students in emergencies. 
  • Verizon Funds are being used for mini-grants to support students in foster care and experiencing homelessness, for cultural engagement, and buses for field trips.

Building Bright Futures: Early Education for Kindergarten Success

  • See You In School campaign emphasizes communities with low enrollment in early childhood education and TK with ads on buses and billboards.
  • New state guidelines allow early childhood education centers to expand enrollment for families of 4 with a $12,000 monthly income.
  • Professional Development – Summer of Learning: 6 days of professional development for early education teachers, 4 days for universal transitional kindergarten, and 9 days for dual language early education.
  • Family Academy offers courses on how to engage young children – courses include foundations of language, understanding early math concepts, healthy social-emotional and physical development, and the importance of playing.
