The Board of Education met on 10/22/24 starting at 11:00 am. You can see the agenda, the materials and get the links to the video of the meeting here.

The District had good news on our students’ academic achievement, as measured by the updated scores.  You can see the video here and presentation materials here.

The Board honored 3 of the 5 LAUSD Teachers of the Year: Erica Lundy, from Welby Way ES (BD3!), Nicholas Westfall from Hamilton HS and ASL Teacher Arby Jean Wolkov from Taft HS.

The board unanimously approved Mr. Schmerelson’s resolution: Fostering Healthy Relationships through Digital Citizenship Week.

    • The resolution considers how the LAUSD community interacts with technology, the use of artificial intelligence, and the possible danger of scams.
    • The district will use existing resources to enhance digital citizenship lessons for students, staff, and parents.
    • The district will update the board on this matter no later than May 2025.

You can watch the video of Board VP Schmerelson presenting the resolution here. This is what he had to say: “We have seen advancements in the technologies that our students are using daily. Artificial intelligence can be a good tool for learning but, if misused, can harm our students’ academic performance. Misinformation spreads quickly, and if we do not prepare our students to recognize it, they may be susceptible to what they read online, even if it is verifiably untrue.”

The following improvements to BD3 schools were approved:

  • Anatola ES: new chain link privacy fence
  • Bassett ES: Install parking lot swing gates
  • Chatsworth Charter HS: Provide exterior lunch tables and upgrade lighting system in multipurpose room
  • Porter MS: Provide classroom furniture
  • Reed Middle School: Upgrade 58 classrooms
