Board of Education meets on 3/11/25

At this meeting, the Board approved the following:

  • Tentative Instructional Calendar for three years, below the calendar for School Year 2025-26 (Full Presentation)
    • Staff returns on 8/13/25 for a Pupil Free Day and 8/14/25 will be the first day of instruction.
    • Last day of instruction will be 6/10/26; however, if 11/12/26 is adopted as Pupil Free Day, 6/11/26 will be the last day of instruction

Resolutions:

Opposing Federal Funding Cuts That Will Harm Students and Families (Gonez/Schmerelson) calls on members of the U.S. Congress to vote NO on any measure that includes:

    • Cuts to Medicaid that will negatively impact basic health and educational services for low-income children and students with disabilities;
    • Changes to restrict school meal eligibility under the Child Nutrition Programs;
    • Reductions in education funding for TK-12 programs, including but not limited to Title I, Title II, and Title III of the ESEA, and funding for programs under the IDEA, Perkins Career Technical Education, Adult Education and Family Literacy, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and federal programs that provide early childhood education and care or;
    •  Block granting of education funding

Celebrate and Recognize Ramadan (Griego/Schmerelson) video Los Angeles Unified School District will send a yearly bulletin to staff and families every year prior to the beginning of Ramadan to clarify our commitment to those who choose to observe Ramadan, including suggestions for how schools can support students who observe Ramadan, include suggestions for how schools can support students who observe Ramadan, including:

Identifying and providing a comfortable space for Muslim students to go instead of the dedicated lunchroom;

  • Providing alternative activities during lunch or allow students to rest or read;
  • Providing fasting student-athletes the option of lighter activities or allowing for occasional breaks;
  • Offering supper to fasting Muslim students so they may take their meals with them at the conclusion of school;
  • Looking for opportunities to provide a brief lesson about Ramadan to promote inclusivity and understanding;
  • Working with educators and staff to offer necessary flexibility for Muslim students and families who request to be excused from school for the Eid al Fitr holiday (The celebratory culmination of Ramadan, which is expected to be celebrated on 3/28/2025 or 3/29/2025);
  • Striving for enhanced communication among parents/guardians, teachers, and students/athletes to monitor, adapt, and address the student’s needs during this period.

Expanding Opportunities: Celebrating Dual Enrollment Awareness Month (Rivas, Cortes Lopez) to raise awareness, encourage participation, and celebrate the accomplishments of students and institutions involved in these programs; the Board directs the Superintendent to:

  • to ensure all appropriate District staff promote dual enrollment programs through outreach, communications, and events in partnership with community colleges, universities, and external stakeholders;
  • and to prepare and submit a report on the District’s dual enrollment programs, analyzing student demographics, participation trends, college and career outcomes, and their alignment with the District’s Strategic Plan goals for postsecondary success. The report should include recommendations to further enhance student participation in dual enrollment programs

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Cesar E. Chavez (Gonez) The Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District celebrates Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning to honor his legacy and will observe it on March 31, 2025;

  • The superintendent will encourage students, staff, school administrators, teachers, and community members to honor Cesar Chavez’s legacy through civic engagement activities, such as by attending the annual Cesar Chavez Day March for Justice in Pacoima on March 30, 2025, and through implementation of service-learning projects and other educational opportunities based on his life, work, and values, and realizing the full intent of the State
  • established Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning

  • School Facilities Projects/Programs Funded by Certificates of Participation Greening projects include replacing pavement, installing drought-resistant plants, more natural grass, trees, and other necessary greening-related improvements for Canoga Park ES and Sylvan Park ES

    • Lawrence Middle School -Upgrades to 53 classrooms
    • Mulholland Middle School –Upgrades to 58 classrooms
