Board of Education met on January 27, 2026

The Board approved the following Resolutions:

Opposing the Unlawful Transfer of U.S. Department of Education Functions to Other Federal Agencies (Newbill, Schmerelson). The resolution:

  • Condemns and opposes the federal administrations action to transfer the Department of Education to other federal departments 
  • Opposes the firing of employees of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services
  • Calls on Congress to reassert its constitutional authority and protect the Department of Education
  • Affirms the District’s standing to safeguard the educational rights of all students 

Recognizing January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and Affirming Support for Student Safety and Prevention (Newbill, Schmerelson).  The resolution:

  • Affirms District commitment to protect students from exploitation by supporting age-appropriate, trauma informed education
  • Encourages professional development for staff to recognize indicators of human trafficking and respond appropriately
  • Encourages collaboration with families, community orgs and public agencies to promote awarenes
  • Reaffirms commitment to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive learning educational environment

Celebration of Black History Month 2026  (Newbill author, all Board members co-sponsor) The resolution:

  • Recognizes February as National Black History Month;
  • Acknowledges that all people of the United States are beneficiaries of the wealth of history given to all by Black Culture, Black Inventors, Black Artists, Black Artisans, Black Advocacy Black Leaders, Black Civic Engagement, and Black workers; Resolved, further, That the Board commits to the inclusion of Black History into the core curriculum, including, but not limited to Ethnic Studies, African American History, and African American Literature, as well as encourages strong integration across coursework in History, English Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, and Arts so that this critical learning lives in the minds of our students beyond the month of February;
  • Directs the Superintendent to expand upon the District’s existing efforts, such as the Black Student Achievement Plan, to continue to identify strategies and tactics to align resources targeted toward eliminating anti-racist educational practices and closing the gap of academic achievement outcomes for Black Students;
  • Recognizes that the District will continue to address challenges unique to Black students and families and recognize the Black Lives Matter at Schools Week of Action (February 2–6, 2026)
  • Directs the Superintendent to work with educators, librarians, all the schools of the District, and our wider community to recognize and celebrate this month, and throughout the academic year, with culturally relevant and appropriate curriculum, programs, ceremonies, and activities that generate in-depth discussion of the complex factual history of the United States and the legacy of Black Americans.

The Board also approved the following item related to BD3 schools: 

  • LPA, Inc. Vintage STEM ES – playground and campus exterior upgrade
  • Justice Street Academy Charter PTA – Justice Street Academy Charter- Funding for an Intervention Coordinator, enrichment, instructional materials, and general supplies.
