Board of Education meets on 4/8/25

The Board of Education met on April 8, starting at  11:00 am.  You can find the links to the agenda, materials and video of the meeting here

At this meeting, among other items the Board approved:

  • Adoption an official land acknowledgment statement, developed in collaboration with local Gabrieleño and Fernandeño Tataviam tribes, to recognize the Indigenous stewardship of the land. to foster cultural awareness, integrate Indigenous perspectives into the curriculum, and create a more inclusive environment for Native American and Indigenous students and families.
  • Recognition of California Department of Education’s Transitional Kindergarten Proposed Qualification Requirements. This aims to ensure sufficient qualified TK teachers, avoid state penalties, and support the expansion of universal preschool and TK programs.
  • We Can Work Contract with the California Department of Rehabilitation which ensures continuity of work experience opportunities for adult transition students. The program provides paid work-based learning experiences, averaging up to 300 hours per participant per year, to over 200 adult transition students annually. It prepares them for competitive integrated employment through internships, job shadowing, and other placements.
  • Purchase of combi-ovens to upgrade cafeteria equipment at 328 elementary school

The Board approved the following items affecting BD3 schools:

  • Golden State Pathways Program (GSPP) grants for Chatsworth CHS, Cleveland CHS, and Wooden SH. The grants are aimed at developing and expanding college and career pathways in high-demand fields like technology, healthcare, education, and climate-related industries. These grants will enable LAUSD to enhance student skills and employability through work-based learning, industry certifications, and alignment with local labor market needs, while also supporting educators with professional development and fostering collaboration with community partners.
  • Outdoor Classroom and Campus Upgrade the campus at Lemay Street Early Education Center, plus nature-based outdoor learning spaces with various activity areas (music, climbing, water play, etc.), including upgrades like new HVAC, roofing, and accessibility improvements.
  • Board District Priority and Region Priority Projects
    • N Balboa Gifted/High Ability Magnet ES: Install new chain link privacy fence 
    • Enadia Way Technology Charter: Provide exterior lunch tables and benches
    • Haynes Charter for Enriched Studies: Install new chain link privacy fence 
    • N Lemay ES: Install new electronic free-standing marquee 
  • Colfax Charter ES – Playground and campus exterior improvements include solar reflective coating in playgrounds, greening and landscaping, building exterior painting, trash enclosures, and accessibility upgrades.

The Board also approved the following resolutions:

  • Creating a More User-Friendly LAUSD by Digitizing District Process (Melvoin, Ortiz Franklin):
    •  Calls on the district to audit its current digitization systems, get stakeholder feedback and eport back to the board within 60 days of findings and plans to transition in order to fully implement by SY 2026-27.
  • Honoring Dolores Huerta: Advancing Educational Equity, Civic Engagement, and Leadership for the Next Generation (Rivas) 
    • Declares April 10th as Dolores Huerta Day, and directs Superintendent to integrate her story into school curriculum as part of a commitment to promote civic education, leadership development, and engagement of all students, and empowering young women of color
  • Earth Day 2025: Strengthening Climate Resilience and Sustainability in LAUSD (Rivas)
    •  Recognizes April 22 as Earth Day and encourages all schools to participate in the 2025 Earth Month Campaign and LASAN’s Earth Day LA 2025 event. LAUSD will continue advocating and pursuing funding to expand sustainability efforts in climate action, clean energy, and sustainability in LAUSD
  • Denim Day 2025 Raising Our Voices Against Sexual Violence (Rivas)
    • Recognizes April 30, 2025, as Denim Day and reaffirms LAUSD’s commitment to ending sexual violence, supporting survivors, and encouraging students and staff to wear denim. Also, encourages the superintendent to ensure staff collaborate with community-based orgs for education materials related to Denim Day.
  •  Aligning Site-Based Professional Development, Collaboration, and Decision-Making in the Community School and Pilot Models (Griego, Rivas, Gonez)
    • Community Schools Steering Committee will create a Community School Professional Development subcommittee to support their professional development to align with assets and needs.
  • Mandated Supporting: Child Abuse Awareness, Safety and Equity (Ortiz Franklin)
    • Commits to a holistic approach towards compassion, promoting the safety of children and the support of families where there may be suspicion of abuse, accounting for disparities in Black children, those living in poverty, by recognizing April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month from 2025 onwards.
