Silvia Martinez, Deputy Chief of Staff

Silvia Martinez serves as Board Member Schmerelson’s Deputy Chief of Staff. In this role, she assists in the management of the Board Member’s office and acts in the capacity of the Chief of Staff in her absence. She supervises office operations, staff, projects and supports associated with executing the Board Member’s goals and priorities.

She manages media inquiries and other public relations matters for the Board Member. Assists in the development of effective relationships with key stakeholders such as teachers, administrators, staff, parents, district leadership, legislators, unions and community groups. Writes, researches, analyzes and follows through on Board Member communications, such as resolutions, reports, press releases, correspondences and other potential agenda items. She also makes recommendations concerning the implementation of board resolutions and policies.

Prior to this role, she was the Director of Policy for six years, in which she made recommendations concerning the implementation of board resolutions, policy issues, district initiatives and strategies. She developed written materials, as well as represented Mr. Schmerelson in District committees and working groups. In close collaboration with District staff, stakeholders and the community, she managed two of Board Member Schmerelson’s committees, which he chaired: the Special Education Committee and the Parent Engagement Committee.

Prior to joining LAUSD Board District 3 staff, Silvia was the Community Affairs Deputy for LAUSD School Board Member Bennett Kayser. In this role, she was the liaison for Mr. Kayser to the communities of East Los Angeles and Southeast cities.

Silvia grew up in Bell, California; a proud product of LAUSD. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish and a Master’s Degree in Public Policy with an emphasis in American Politics and International Relations. During her spare time, Silvia enjoys drawing, playing tennis, reading Spanish literature, and watching movies.
